Too many stories and not enough recipes. Not a lot of help.
This is a very inspirational book, with stories of ordinary people who have lost a lot of weight and are keeping it off. The recipes are all from the people in the book. I recommend it.
I read about this book and decided I would try it. The book is easy to follow and easy to read. I'm still using it so can't report weight loss yet. The recipes are good.
This is the most inspirational book on weight loss that I have ever read. Joy is such a delightful author with truly moving success stories. I have already made a few of the recipes in the book and they are awesome!!! This is a MUST read for anyone struggling with weight loss. Her tips, stories, and recipes are uncomparable.
I've been reading this book while on the elliptical. It's the only time I get to read, as my two young kids otherwise interrupt so much... I can't get in any reading. I've lost 27 lbs.. so far!! Just lots of exercise and watching my portions. I first started off with purchasing the version of this book... but, I love the recipes so much, that I bought the book, too. I LOVE the Turkey Veggie Stew recipe, and so does my husband. It makes a big batch, great leftover, has lots of fiber and veggies. It's just so tasty!! and inexpensive to make, too. I've tried some of the omelet recipes. There's a salad... with corn, avocado, and cherry tomatoes. They're all just wonderful. GREAT inspiring experiences to read, as well. My hat is off to all that have contributed to this book. It's a keeper!! LOVE the Turkey, Veggie Stew... did I mention that?? LOL
I was looking for a nutrition book, rather than a "diet" plan. I have a number of food-sensitivities that are getting worse as I get older, and I wanted advice on optimal nutricion. A few recipes in here look good (submitted by the dieters themselves), but this wasn't exactly what I wanted. I did give it 5 stars because her recommendations are accurate and useful. We (sedentary) Americans have to find a new way of eating--for a lifetime! Or, rather, we must go back to a sensible way of eating. Which means we have to accept home-cooking, and not rely on the processed CRAP and convenience foods we've come to rely on. Too much salt, too much sugar and chemicals that are added as preservatives that have were never studied for long-term effects on humans in the first place! And portions that are way out of line in terms of the calories we'll burn sitting in front of a computer.
I love this book. Very inspirational. I like reading each person's experience. It helps me know I'm doing the right things, and I've gotten some great ideas from each person. I've lost 5 pounds in the last couple of weeks, without being on a specific diet. I'm more interested in making a life style change like the people I've been reading about. Great stories, great recipes, inspirational book.
As someone who struggles with her weight, I enjoy watching Joy Bauer's "Joy Fit Club" segments on the Today Show. In fact, that is where I heard about this book. The members of Joy's Fit Club have lost 100 pounds or more. I only have a fraction of that to lose, but the stories shared and the advice given are still relevant to me. The book profiles 30 members of Joy's club, and goes into more detail than what is shared on the Today Show. I love their success stories! It certainly makes me think that if these ordinary, everyday people can lose 100 pounds or more, I should be able to lose a few pounds myself.

The book discusses 8 important rules that you need to succeed. Some examples You need to "get your head in the game;" you need to be ready to make a full-time commitment - for the rest of your life, not just until you lose 10 pounds or whatever. You need to exercise daily. Start out simple and build up from there. You need to recognize and avoid your trigger foods. (I don't know how many times I have purchased a bag of chocolates or potato chips, convinced that I'll eat them in moderation when I know deep inside that I really can't.) Also, you need to forgive your slip-ups. You need to get away from the "Well, I blew it today, that's it until I restart my diet next Monday" mentality (also a problem for me).

In addition, the book contains a variety of healthy recipes, including main entrees, soups, breads, desserts, etc. The nutrition information (calories, fat, fiber, carbohydrates, etc.) of each is listed. This will be especially helpful to me, since a member of my family was recently diagnosed with diabetes and needs to track his carbohydrate intake.

I find the book very inspirational, and look forward to using the advice and recipes ... and hopefully, losing my unwanted pounds.
